This beautiful and elegant formal living room from Traditional Home, October 2009 issue, was designer by interior designer Eva Quateman. She has used Bold, Black and White through out the project and has used them in different proportion in each and every room.

In this living room, black and gold are used almost equally. Black creates a calm and formal environment while gold highlights the brights and creates an overall contrast. This is very nice but could almost be too formal and dull so the small amounts of Chestnut finish on the bergere and stools break the formalness up and bring the entire room to life.

Many people are afraid to mix different colors and finishes in one room but it is actually okay to put two or three different colors and finishes together. For example, the room above would be very dull if it only had the ebony finish. The most important thing is to be consistent with the style you are trying to create and use the right proportion of colors to balance the overall design.
